Chapter 1-1

Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primevalforest. It was a picture of a boa constrictorin the act of swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing.

◆magnificent /mæɡˈnɪfɪsnt/ adj.

◆called True Stories from Nature 可以看做非限制性定语修饰a book(解释补充说明)

◆primeval /praɪˈmivəl/ adj. 原始的

◆forest /ˈfɒr.ɪst/ n.

◆a boa constrictor 一条蟒蛇

◆boa /'bəʊə/ n. 蟒

◆constrictor /kən'strɪktə/ n.

◆in the act of doing (sth.)

◆swallow /'swɒləʊ/ v. 吞下

◆copy /ˈkɒp.i/ n.

In the book it said, “Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion.”

I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:

◆swallow sth. whole 把……

◆prey /preɪ/ n[U].猎物 v.捕食

◆whole /həʊl/ adj. 完整的

◆chew /tʃuː/ vt.

◆be able to do sth

◆digestion /daɪˈdʒestʃən/ n.

◆ponder /ˈpɒn.dər/ v.

ponder on/over/upon

e.g.

I pondered hard over the reply to his letter.

◆adventure /ədˈventʃər/ n.

◆jungle /ˈdʒʌŋɡəl/ n.

◆drawing /'drɔː(r)ɪŋ/ n. 图画

I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.

But they answered, “Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?”

My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:

◆show sth. to sb.

◆masterpiece /'mɑːstəpiːs/ n. 杰作

◆ask sb. sth.

◆whether the drawing frightened them 宾语从句

◆frighten /'fraɪt(ə)n/ v.

◆be frightened by...

◆digest /daɪ'dʒest/ v.

◆inside /ɪnˈsaɪd/ n.

e.g.

I had your rooms cleaned and aired.

◆explain /ɪkˈspleɪn/ v.
